Why clothes still smell after washing

1. Bacteria not fully killed
Sweat and body oils feed bacteria. If washing temperature is low or detergent is weak, some bacteria survive and multiply in the fabric.

2. Wet clothes sat too long
Leaving laundry in the machine even for a few hours allows bacteria and mildew to grow quickly.

3. Overloaded washing machine
Clothes don’t move freely, so dirt and odor don’t fully wash out.

4. Too much detergent
Surprisingly, excess detergent doesn’t rinse out well. It leaves residue that traps smell.

5. Dirty washing machine
Mold and buildup inside the drum can transfer odor back onto clean clothes.

6. Poor drying
If clothes don’t dry completely (especially indoors), they can develop a sour or fishy smell.

Where baking soda fits in (and where it doesn’t)

Baking soda helps neutralize odors, but it does NOT:

  • kill all bacteria
  • replace proper washing
  • fix a dirty washing machine

So if clothes still smell, baking soda alone won’t solve it—it’s only a support step.

Simple fix that actually works

  • Wash with enough detergent (not too much)
  • Add white vinegar in rinse cycle (better odor removal than baking soda alone)
  • Don’t overload the machine
  • Dry clothes immediately after washing
  • Clean your washing machine once a month
