What Adrian never understood was the real extent of Mara’s power. His father’s investment firm had saved his company with a bridge loan months earlier. The doors that opened for him in the business and social world belonged, in fact, to the Ellison surname. Even the engagement ring had been purchased with money from her, through her personal jeweler.
In addition, Mara had received an anonymous photograph weeks earlier: Adrian kissing Tessa, Camille’s best friend, in front of a hotel service elevator. He had ignored her, not out of naivety, but because he understood that well-managed patience is a more powerful tool than immediate reaction.
The lunch that changed everything
Two days later, Adrian convened a luncheon at Bellamy House, an exclusive private club. Her intention was to show unity in front of investors, family members and the editor of a social magazine that would cover the wedding. He didn’t know one essential detail: That club had been founded by Mara’s grandmother, and the staff recognized her, not him.
When Adrian arrived, he found a cream-colored envelope sealed with black wax on his chair. Inside were four documents: the public announcement of the breakdown of the engagement, the notice of cancellation of all wedding privileges linked to Mara’s name, the letter of default on the business loan, and the compromising photograph.
The chain collapse
The situation developed with surgical precision. Camille opened the envelope, turned pale, and Adrian tried to play down the matter with his usual charm. But when Mara mentioned that her company was officially in default for inflating non-existent contracts, Adrian’s face completely broke down.
