On Thursday night, Gabriel opened his eyes. His first word was my name. The second: “Mauricio”. With enormous effort he uttered four more words: “Blue Folder. Safe.” There was his original report and a handwritten letter naming me his representative in case of emergency. Years ago, after an argument with his brother, Gabriel had created a voting trust: if he became incapacitated, 41% of his shares temporarily passed to me.
The meeting that changed everything
On Friday, Mauricio convened the council at the Santa Fe offices, including journalists, to show himself as the responsible brother. They presented a forged signature of mine: they had imitated the curve of the M, but they forgot that I never signed with my second surname on business documents.
I asked Mauricio to explain what Corona Norte Inversiones was and why 18 million had been transferred. When he tried to dismiss me as an “emotionally unstable wife,” the doors opened. Prosecutor Natalia Fuentes entered with specialized agents, followed by Doña Elvira in a wheelchair and Leonel, alive, thin but firm. “I’m the dead man you didn’t check well,” he said, looking at Mauricio.
I projected the video on the screen in the living room. Mauricio’s voice ordering the brakes to be sabotaged and Rebeca’s laughter filled the room. The directors blanched. When Mauricio shouted that everything was fake and that I was trying to steal the company, I placed on the table the blue folder with the trust validated by the notary Esteban Maldonado, whose authenticity the prosecutor’s office had already confirmed that morning.
Justice and reconstruction
Mauricio and Rebeca were arrested for criminal association, fraud, attempted homicide and falsification of documents. The sale to Corona Norte was cancelled. Gabriel began a long recovery, and the company was placed under transparent management while defrauded employees were compensated. Leonel received protection and Doña Elvira, the recognition of a woman whose silent kindness had dismantled a million-dollar conspiracy. An old 500-peso bill, given out of gratitude, ended up saving two lives and an entire family.
