2. The belief of bad omen near the bed
In certain folk traditions, it is considered that it is not advisable to place socks near the head of the bed, either lying on the floor or leaning in close places. In some cultures this is interpreted as an omen of bad luck or even illness or death for the owner of those socks.
These types of beliefs are often related to the idea that the bed is an intimate and energetic space: it represents rest, vulnerability, and renewal. Leaving personal items associated with dirt, wear and tear, or “clutter” can be interpreted as inviting negative influences or unwanted energies on the person sleeping there.
3. Symbolism of socks in folklore
Beyond the bed, socks in various superstitions represent opposite concepts:
- Full pairs vs. lost socks: Losing a sock can symbolize imbalance or bad luck, while keeping both can be seen as harmony and order.
- Socks worn in bed: In some cultures (such as certain traditions in Japan or the West), sleeping in socks can be associated with negative concepts because it recalls the image of the dead covered or prepared, which is linked to the idea that it is “not appropriate” to live rest.
